Black Narcissus Storyline

Five young British nuns are invited to move to a windy "palace", former house of the concubines of an old general, in the top of a mountain in Mopu, Himalaya, to raise the convent of Saint Faith Order, a school for children and girls, and an infirmary for the local dwellers. Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) is assigned as the superior sister, and her liaison with civilization is the rude government agent Mr. Dean (David Farrar). The lonely and exotic place and the presence of Mr. 'Dean awake the innermost desires in the flesh of the sisters, and Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron) becomes mad with the temptation.

Black Narcissus trivia

The backdrops were blown-up black and white photographs. The art department then gave them their breathtaking colors by using pastel chalks on top of them.
'Jack Cardiff' (qv) said that the lighting and color palette of this film was inspired by the works of 17th-century Dutch painter Vermeer.
St Faith (Sainte Foy in French, Santa Fe in Spanish) is supposedly a French martyr executed at Agen in Gaul (France) during the period when Diocletian was persecuting the Christians. She was tortured to death in a red-hot brazier. Her shrine is at Conques, France.
The much admired Himalayan scenery was all created in the studio (with glass shots and hanging miniatures).
Because of the Technicolor camera and film stock, the sets needed an astounding 800 foot-candles of light just to operate at T2.8, which was the widest lens aperture setting.

Black Narcissus goofs

CREW: During a shot of the Himalayan mountains, stagehands can be seen standing and walking about behind the scrim on which the mountains are painted.
CONT: Two similar Christian religious statues are shown in the convent in the film. One is on the floor in the blue room where Dean first meets Sister Clodagh to talk business. It is hidden behind the nuns where they enter to speak to Dean. Another very similar statue, but bearing a cross (possibly St Faith), is shown next to Dean as he converses with Sister Clodagh. It has some packing material (straw) on it (19:02). Later on, this second statue is shown being unpacked from its crate by Dean and a servant to be placed above the doorway leading to the yard (27:27).
FACT: The Order of the Servants of Mary is a Roman Catholic order of priests, a branch of which is open to lay people. It is also known as the Secular Order of the Servants of Mary (Servite Secular Order). There does not appear to be an order for nuns of that name.
