Casanova Storyline

Casanova is love with Francesca, who thinks he is a friend of himself even though he is engaged Victoria, who is the love of Giovanni, Francessca's brother. Francessca is betrothed to Paprizzio who thinks Casanova is the feminist writer Guardi, who is really Francessca's nomme de plume. Amidst all these secret identities and misunderstandings, the Catholic Church sends Pucci to bring Casanova and Guardi to trial for heresy.

Casanova goofs

FACT: The "university auditorium" where Casanova first sees Francesca Bruni is not a building in Venice, but the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, a town approx. 45 minutes west of Venice.
DATE: In one long shot of Venice at sunset, the viewer can clearly see contrails in the sky caused by passing jet planes.
DATE: Water can be seen flowing from a bilge pump on Paprizzio's sailboat when sailing into the port of Venice.
FAKE: For a split second when Casanova jumps from one building to another you can see the harness.
CONT: SPOILER: During the duel, right before it is revealed that Francesca is, in fact, fighting in her brother's place, she goes from hat on, to hat fallen off, to hat back on within the space of a second.

Casanova trivia

When Casanova is running away from the Inquisition in the opening scene he jumps through a window and into the University of Venice. The University of Venice never existed and the building he jumps into is in fact the "Theatro Olympico", one of the first Renaissance theatres- and 140 kilometers away from Venice.
During the short sword fight at the end of the film when they are running away 'Oliver Platt' (qv) takes off his cape and fights with it just as 'Oliver Reed (I)' (qv) did as Athos in _The Three Musketeers (1973)_ (qv). Oliver Platt played Porthos in the 1993 version of _The Three Musketeers (1993)_ (qv).
Francesca Bruni was not a real person. The character name is taken from the Bob Hope film 'Casanova's Big Night'.
