Needful Things trivia

The original cut of the film ran 180 minutes. It was heavily edited down to 120 minutes for theatrical release. The uncut version does occasionally air on cable television, though it has yet to see a video release.
At one point during filming, director Fraser Heston (the infant Moses in The Ten Commandments), took Max von Sydow (Jesus in The Greatest Story Ever Told) aside to discuss how he would play the upcoming scene. One observer noted, "That's something you don't see every day -- Moses telling Jesus how to play the devil."

Brian Rusk's mother appears in the longer, 3 hours version. In her sidestory she purchases sun glasses worn by Elvis Presley. She can still be seen in the cut version of the movie at the end wearing the sun glasses.
The Castle Rock company distributed this film. The setting of Needful Things is a town called Castle Rock, Maine - the fictional Stephen King town that the distribution company was named after when it released _Stand by Me (1986)_ (qv) in 1986. Castle Rock was the setting for not only Stand By Me and Needful Things, but also _The Dead Zone (1983)_ (qv), _Cujo (1983)_ (qv), and _The Dark Half (1993)_ (qv).
